    Anne Frank - Her Diary and Beyond

    Course Description: Course will discuss Anne Frank’s diaries and other writings. Course will include other diaries of captivity. Materials will be provided as PDF files prior to first class.
    Note(s): 5-weeks class meeting online via ZOOM September 22, 29, October 6, 13, and 20. Instructor will provide PDFs of both Anne Frank's diary and supplementary readings.

    Ballet for Balance

    Course Description: This is a class for active adults who want to improve their balance while learning the basics of ballet. No tutus or leotards required! No previous ballet experience necessary.

    Best Safety Tips for Seniors Cancelled

    Course Description: The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit will instruct citizens on ways to protect themselves and their belongings. Some of the topics covered in the course will be fraud, scams, ID theft, personal safety, and home safety.

    Brain Hacks - the Book

    Course Description: This book is filled with tips and ways to boost your brain power and make your brain work for you, keeping it sharp and functioning at optimal levels! Your comments, experiences and discussion will be welcomed to share on the various 'hacks'.

    Card Sharks - Deal with It!

    Course Description: Forgot the rules to an old favorite? Ready to learn a new card game? Whether you're a seasoned veteran or the next rookie on deck, you will learn the rules and tips you need to master six different card games while connecting with old friends and making new ones.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Dolores Noechel is a former Ruckel math teacher, OCSD Instructional Technology and Media Services Specialist, and Assistant Principal at Fort Walton Beach High School.

    Chair Yoga
    Meeting Time: Tuesday 9:00 to 10:00
    Classroom: Online
    Course Description: Chair Yoga classes will explore Hatha yoga through breathing, feeling and listening to the body, using a chair as the primary prop. The class will focus on both seated and supported standing poses. The class is designed for anyone interested in beginning a Yoga Practice. The class will introduce basic breathing techniques, stretches, poses, and meditation.
    Note(s): For this online class, you need a sturdy chair, such as a folding chair, and your yoga mat. Also, PC or MAC with camera and microphone for access to Zoom. A camera view of your full self will allow instructor to provide helpful feedback.

    Cooking with Chef Dan Pettis

    Classroom: One20 - A Modern Bistro
    Course Description: Enroll to enjoy a Coastal Cooking demo class and dinner with a local Chef. Learn Chef-style tips and tricks in the kitchen that will make you the hit of your next dinner party.
    Note(s): At all sessions, the $110 course fee includes dinners and non-alcoholic beverages; however, beer and wine may be purchased separately. The class will meet for 6 sessions, September 13, 20, October 4, 11, 25, and November 1 at "One 20 Bistro" at 120 Partin Drive in Niceville.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Chef Dan Pettis is native to the Fort Walton Beach-Destin area. He attended the FL Culinary Institute and graduated with honors. In 2009, he opened the "One 20 Bistro" to great acclaim. Chef Dan has received many awards for his unique culinary talents. He has expanded to a catering food truck and Micro Brewery.

    Cribbage - How to Play
    Meeting Time: Tuesday 2:45 to 4:15

    Course Description: Learn the basic game of Cribbage for two players, following the rules in The American Cribbage Congress (ACC) Rule Book. Cribbage Boards and 52-Card decks will be available at the class. The class is ideal for new players, or those players wanting to gain more confidence in tournament play. Sequence of play, protocol, strategy, and tournament specific rules will be introduced followed by game play. This is an 8-week class.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Pete Seda is Director for the local American Cribbage Congress (ACC) Greater Okaloosa Grass Roots Cribbage Club. Annette is a certified judge for ACC tournament play.

    Crime and Justice in America
    Meeting Time: Thursday 1:00 to 2:30
    Classroom: UWF Classroom
    Course Description: Do we have a crime problem in America? If you say yes, why? If you say no, why? We will look at a bit of the history of the criminal justice system in America. We'll talk about all the different types of crimes and how they are punished, or not. We'll talk about why that is the case, or isn't. If this is your first time in this class and if all goes well, you will leave class more bewildered, bemused, and befuddled than when you started, or not!

    Class Leader Bio(s): Dr. Kathy Johnson received a BS in 1987 and MS in 1989 in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University. Her PhD in Criminology is from Indiana University in Pennsylvania. She is currently a tenured associate professor of Criminal Justice for UWF.

    Drones for Beginners Cancelled
    Meeting Time: Friday 8:30 to 10:00
    Classroom: UWF Classroom
    Course Description: If you have just purchased a drone, or are about to do so, this class is for you. Learn the different types of drones that are available and which one to buy for your needs. Learn how to fly a drone safely and stay within FAA regulations. The class will provide tips on how to shoot video with a drone and edit it. Outdoor practice sessions in safe areas, as well as indoor classes, will be included. You do not have to own a drone to take this class, but if you do own one, you must register it with the FAA to fly it legally on the UWF campus.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Billy Walker has taught Video Processing and iPad classes at CLL for several years. He owns three drones and has been flying them for over three years. Walt Spodeck, a retired helicopter pilot, will be the co-leader for this course.

    Encaustics Plus Cancelled

    Course Description: You will learn all about wax, both hot and cold wax. You'll also take as many pieces home as you can make, many framed. You'll learn many techniques. You cannot make a mistake; just have fun!

    Class Leader Bio(s): Helen Harris has dabbled in almost every medium of art her whole life. Still does, even with a career in the airline industry. Encaustics and paper cutting have become her favorite to date.

    Exercise for Flexibility and Balance
    Meeting Time: Friday 10:30 to 12:00

    Course Description: Flexibility and balance are two on-going challenges for older adults. This class concentrates on stretching routines to improve flexibility, and on balancing techniques. Students proceed at their individual paces and are encouraged to practice outside of class.
    Note(s): Bring a mat or blanket for floor exercise. Class meets in the "Christian Life Center" at the First Baptist Church, 21 First St., FWB.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Jean Lee-Jackson, a Registered Physical Therapist, is now a consultant who specializes in home health care. From years of experience, she sees the detrimental effects from a lack of exercise.

    EZ Line Dance
    Meeting Time: Monday 11:20 to 12:20

    Course Description: The class is an introduction to basic line dances. Participation will exercise your brain and heart while you learn the dances done at family gatherings. Even if you don't master them at first, keep trying; a challenge is good for your brain!

    Foundations and Principles of the U.S. Constitution
    Meeting Time: Tuesday 10:15 to 11:45
    Classroom: UWF Classroom
    Course Description: Class will study the "Original Intent" of the Framers using writings of the Founders. A study of The Federalist Papers and other writings by the Framers will be used. Mr. Brock has developed a system for memorizing parts of the Constitution. In addition, a Dramatization of the events at the Constitutional Convention will be shown. $3.00 for cost of materials and a pocket size Constitution to be collected in class.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Paul Wendel Brock has a B.A. in History and a M.A. in Educational Leadership. He taught Advanced Placement (college level) History at Ft. Walton Beach High School and retired after 30 years.

    French for Beginners
    Meeting Time: Monday 1:00 to 2:30

    Course Description: Topics covered in this introductory course will include greetings, family, activities, travel, numbers, and that all-important aspect of French culture: food. In class we will practice basic vocabulary and structures. Afterwards, two free online programs will provide opportunities to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing the material as much -- or as little -- as you wish.

    Class Leader Bio(s): After studying French in high school and college, Chris Lanoue went to France for a summer "to become fluent" -- and stayed for 17 years. Mission accomplished. She has taught French in Okaloosa County for 20 years.

    French for Review and Conversation

    Course Description: If you took French in school and feel like you've forgotten it all, you may be surprised at how much will come back with a little practice. After reviewing vocab and a verb tense in class, we'll practice in small groups using breakout rooms. Two free online programs will allow you to practice more between classes if you wish.

    Fun Exercise in the WATER!!

    Fundamentals of Investing

    Games Galore

    Course Description: Want to expand your social skills while having fun? This class will give you an opportunity to do that by learning new board and card games. Try your hand at Euchre, Wizard, and Qwirkle, along with other familiar and not so familiar games.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Karen Lauer is an experienced artist and CLL class leader. She loves to play games and introduced Wizard to the CLL community and camp conferences. Denny Lauer is a retired Navy Flight Officer who sat around a lot so has years of experience playing games!

    Golf 101
    Meeting Time: Monday 8:30 to 10:00
    Classroom: Shalimar Pointe Golf Course
    Course Description: This course will cover all aspects of golf for the novice, to include etiquette, terminology, grip, what club to use, etc.
    Note(s): Class meets at the Shalimar Point Golf Course, a $5.00 per person per session fee to cover cost of all needed supplies (clubs, balls, tees, etc.) will be collected. Class starts September 13.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Floyd Clarkson has been a golf club professional for 20 years and has taught golf professionally for 30 years.

    Grand Tour of the Universe
    Meeting Time: Tuesday 10:15 to 11:45
    Classroom: UWF Classroom
    Course Description: There have been many scientific revolutions in the last 120 years, from Relativity, Quantum Theory, to the discovery of Black Holes, the expansion of the universe and the mysterious Dark Matter and Dark Energy. This course takes a very basic look at topics in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology through the lens of these revolutions in knowledge. The discoveries and their discoverers will also be put into historical context, for example, what accepted wisdom did the revolutions overturn and what was the impact.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Louis Cerrato has a Ph.D. in engineering and worked for the Defense Dept. for over 40 years. He has a keen interest in all the physical sciences and tries to keep up with the latest discoveries.

    Course Description: This course is for Genealogy Researchers who utilize the Internet and other tech tools; an introduction to both old and new websites will be a factor, as well as the tried and true "Standards for Genealogy". What is new in 2021? What is in your Family History "toolbox"? Prerequisites: Student should have access to the Internet and a reasonable knowledge of navigating the "world-wide" web. All levels of experience welcome.

    Guide to Estate Planning for FL Residents

    Course Description: This course provides an overview of estate planning, probate issues, estate taxes, Medicaid planning, asset protection, and guardianship. A non-refundable $15 materials fee.

    Class Leader Bio(s): J. Mark Fisher received his Juris Doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law in 1984. He has limited his practice to the field of Estate Planning, Probate, Wills and Trusts, and Nursing Home Medicaid Planning for over 30 years and has been teaching classes at UWF for 24 years. He has offices in FWB, Pensacola, and Panama City.

    History of Aerospace
    Meeting Time: Wednesday 8:30 to 11:45

    Course Description: This course traces the invention of flight, covering both the history of aeronautics (flight within the atmosphere) and history of astronautics (flight into space), including the relevant technical, political, military, and economic developments and influences, and the impact of flight on society. This is a double session 4-weeks class meeting from 8:30 to 11:45 on September 15, 22, 29, and October 6.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Richard Hallion is a former founding Curator of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, a former NASA Historian and USAF senior executive, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Royal Aeronautical Society, and the Royal Historical Society.

    iLearn, iUnderstand, iPad

    Course Description: Are you ready to learn how to use your iPad effectively? This course will take you from the very basics to making your iPad your own. Individual needs will be addressed to make sure everyone has an opportunity to learn. We will explore the most popular iPad tricks and topics, including how to get the most out of your iPad experience. Students must bring their own iPads to class. This is a six-week course meeting on September 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11 and 18.

    Improver Line Dance

    Course Description: This line dance class is designed for line dancers who wish to be challenged beyond absolute beginner. In this class we dance to a wide variety of music. You will learn some of the worldwide top-20 easy dances as well as old favorites. Great exercise and great fun!

    Class Leader Bio(s): Aggie Marler loves to dance! She began in couple's ballroom/country dancing, but fell in love with line dancing at the World Dance Championships 2001. Since then she has had the privilege to teach line dancing, to deejay at national dance events for more than 10 years, and to teach local classes more than 15 years.

    Course Description: Which camera takes the best pictures? The one you have with you, of course! In this class, you will learn how to get more out of the iPhone camera. Topics will include becoming a better photographer, adjusting your iPhone camera, editing pictures on your iPhone, photo and video editing, creating and sharing albums, and downloading your iPhone pictures for actual prints to enjoy and share. Sorry, this class is specifically for iPhones/iPads; users of other brands of smartphones may not derive any benefit.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Nicole Blatt takes lots of pictures! Her last phone had over 10,000 pics and some were even good. She retired from the USAF in 2011 and now has an awesome 9-year-old son named Bodie.

    Jim's Dog Handling and Obedience
    Meeting Time: Tuesday 1:00 to 2:30
    Classroom: UWF Classroom
    Course Description: The AKC Canine Good Citizen Award test will be the foundation for this course. A fee of $25 for the test will be collected. We will teach your dog how to accept a friendly stranger, allowing them to pet, examine and groom the dog. We will teach your dog how to walk on a loose leash through a crowd and to stay when commanded. Your dog will come when called, act properly around other dogs, and tolerate distractions. Your dog will be on a leash at all times. There is no size, shape, or age limitation as long as your dog has current vaccinations.
    Note(s): First class meets in UWF room 835 with no dogs, but bring shot records. Handlers must have a 6' leash with well-fitting buckle or pinch collar. No choke chains allowed. $25 fee for test.
    Class Leader(s): James Eustace and Margot Penner
    Class Leader Bio(s): Jim Eustace has been a dog trainer for over 30 years. He has trained for and administered the CGC exam. You may have seen his support dog around campus. He acquired his love for well-trained dogs during his AF tour in Germany where they are welcomed virtually everywhere. Margot Penner will be the co-leader for this course.

    Law, Medicine, and Society
    Meeting Time: Thursday 8:30 to 10:00

    Course Description: History of law and medicine, the ethics of each, their interplay and changes as society evolved in the western world from antiquity to present day.
    Class Leader(s): Dr. Arthur Lester
    Class Leader Bio(s): Dr. Arthur Lester obtained his B.A. at Oberlin College, his M.D. at the Chicago Medical School, performed his Residency in Ob-Gyn at George Washington, obtained his J.D. at FSU College of Law, and served in the USAF (1967-69). He practices both medicine and law.

    Let's Paint!
    Meeting Time: Thursday 1:00 to 3:00
    Classroom: ADSO - Paint Studio
    Course Description: This is a congenial, supportive group, with no pressure or "must-do." Instruction will be in watercolor, but the basic concepts of color, composition, and perspective can be applied to all media. There will be suggested topics and examples each week, but students are welcome to bring their own photos and images.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Dan Robison and Donna Brantley, members of the Arts and Design Society of Okaloosa and Emerald Coast Plein Air Painters work primarily in watercolor. They are not professional artists but enthusiastic "encouragers" for people to pick up their brushes.

    Living Your Best Life, From Inside Out

    Course Description: Living Your Best Life, From Inside Out is an opportunity to explore and enhance your relationship with yourself and how you react to all you see, hear, and experience. By gaining this understanding and awareness, you are given options you've never seen that you have, leading you to make better choices. These choices are in your best interest and lead you in the direction of Living Your Best Life. The class is both educational and experiential. Each week I will share a tool for you to experience and "play with" to see how it can create amazing changes in every aspect of your life. Join me on this journey.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Debbie Feldman has been a teacher, counselor, and healer all her adult life. She has a Bachelor's in Education, a Master's in Clinical and Medical Social Work, and training in the healing arts of Massage, Reiki, Reflexology, and Therapeutic Touch. Debbie has been in practice as a psychotherapist and healer for over 35 years. She also owned and operated a fast food restaurant, giving her insight into what it means to run a small business.

    Locker Hook Rugs

    Course Description: Learn how to make a locker hook rug with fabric. You will do a sampler with different materials and then a small rug -- all materials and tools provided.

    Taking Better Pictures - Advanced Edition

    Course Description: This course is an advanced course and much of the course will depend on students understanding basic photographic terms and accomplishing the assigned weekly homework. The practical portions will be at preannounced locations where you can practice. Each student will post/email a sampling of their weekly work to a central location. The class will focus on rules of design, value and hue balance, composing in both 2 and 3 dimensions, reflective photography, photo compression/expansion using lens length and focal range, night special effects, photos of the moon and stars, Macro photography, etc. Students must have a method to access and display their work using zoom. This is not a class for beginning photograpers.

    Course Description: This course is all about learning your camera and taking better pictures. We will focus on rules of design and use of DSLRs and mirrorless digitals. If the past is any indication, we will have representatives for Canon, Nikon, Sony and bridge cameras to answer some of your camera particular questions. The practical portions will be at preannounced locations where you can practice. Each student will post/email a sampling of their weekly work to a central location. Practicum locations will be dependent on weather and will be emailed to the students. Students must bring their camera and instruction manual to each class.

    U.S. Supreme Court: Its History and Role

    Course Description: Article III of the Constitution provides for the Supreme Court of the United States. Since 1790, it has functioned as the third branch of government. This course will examine the Court's history and traditions, role of the chief justice, qualifications of the justices, nomination and confirmation process, daily operations, caseload, and judicial review. We will examine the Court's impact on American society from the early years to the new millennium and the Presidential Commission on the current debate on Supreme Court reform.

    Class Leader Bio(s): Dr. Marie Hallion is an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School and the School of Undergraduate Studies of the University of Maryland Global Campus.     Ukulele - Beginner's Class

    Course Description: This class will introduce students to the ukulele and basic chords. Students will learn, with these chords, the strumming patterns and chord changes needed to play songs by the end of the class term.
    Note(s): Participants must have their own ukulele, or rent one from Playground Music. In addition, they should bring a tuner device (Shark brand) to tune their ukulele for each class meeting. This 4-weeks class meets October 14, 21, 28 and November 4.

    Course Description: The Royal Navy ruled the waves and the sun never set on the British Empire. The expanding right to vote was balanced by the workhouse and Irish Famine. In a century of peace, the British Army was constantly at war with someone, somewhere. Victorian propriety was challenged by Oscar Wilde, and presiding over it all were the Widow, Dizzy, and the Grand Old Man.

    Video Processing

    Course Description: Intermediate class: basic computer skills required. Do you have plans for those video clips and photos that you have saved over the years? Learn to convert them into movies and save them to your flash drive, post on the internet, or send as an email attachment. Using the free Microsoft program "Windows Movie Maker" students learn to edit audio and video clips, add music, titles, transitions and special effects. Equipment will be available to convert analog videos to digital format for editing. An additional topic: Digitizing old 8-mm or super 8-mm movies before they deteriorate.     Weather and Geology 101

    Course Description: Do you want to become a savvy consumer of the weather and climate info that bombards us daily? Then this is the class for you! Topics are divided into three general areas. Part 1: Instill a basic understanding and appreciation of the earth sciences (meteorology, geology, oceanography). Part 2: Discuss earth science "current events." Part 3: Provide personal anecdotes from over 30 years' experience as a meteorologist and "glorified data collector" (aka, "World Famous Hurricane Hunter").
