15-Minute Yoga with Friends

Meeting Time: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:30-9:00

Course Description: Studies show a short daily yoga practice with friends is beneficial to your mind and body. (Ok well, that was my study with me being the subject and I feel much better when I do this!) This is a quick session to get your day started. We will sign on to Zoom and have a short chat over coffee and then do a 15-min (approx.) yoga session. Yoga flow via YouTube instructors.

However, she started doing this with friends every weekday in 2020 and finds it so wonderful to getting the day started, that they continue still. We use YouTube videos from great yoga instructors. Nicole retired from the USAF in 2011 and now has an awesome 11-year-old son named Bodie. Nita Wilkinson joined our coffee-talk yoga group in January 2021 and is a substitute host.

Art Therapy

Course Description: Art therapy is a therapeutic technique that uses your creativity and artistic mediums to encourage self-expression, emotional processing and psychological healing. Backyard Astronomy

Course Description: Have you ever wondered what that 'star' is in the evening sky? Join a NASA Solar System Ambassador in exploring the solar system and beyond. Learn how to use a small telescope, how to navigate the night sky and identify the objects that you see. Discussions will cover the solar system as well as celestial objects such as constellations, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. We will also cover the language of Astronomy from appulse to syzygy to zenith.

Class Leader Bio(s): Tom Haugh is a long-time amateur astronomer. He is a NASA Solar System Ambassador and the outreach coordinator for the NorthWest Florida Astronomy Association. His personal observatory is recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). His observations concentrate on asteroid and comet orbit verification and he has submitted more than 8,000 astrometric observations to the IAU's Minor Planet Center.

Ballet for Balance

Course Description: This is a class for active adults who want to improve their balance while learning the basics of ballet. No tutus or leotards required! No previous ballet experience necessary.

Crime, Property Crime: What is it and How Much is There?

Curve Stitching: From Mathematics to Art

Dissecting Disasters

Course Description: This class will look at some disastrous accidents, incidents, and production failures that have happened over the years in the aviation, maritime fields, and also the automotive industry. We will try to understand what went wrong and why the preventive actions did or did not work. We will look at the circumstances of incidents and what was officially done to prevent possible reoccurrence of the problems. I will provide visual aids and summaries for each class.

Class Leader Bio(s): Robert Huffman retired as an Air Force NCO after 27 years of service. He was a C-130 Crew Chief and Air Force Instructor. He also worked for Boeing. He has a bachelor's degree in political science.

Drones for Beginners

Course Description: If you have just purchased a drone, or are about to do so, this class is for you. Learn the different types of drones that are available and which one to buy for your needs. Learn how to fly a drone safely and stay within FAA regulations. The class will provide tips on how to shoot video with a drone and edit it. Outdoor practice sessions in safe areas, as well as indoor classes, will be included. You do not have to own a drone to take this class, but if you do own one, you must register it with the FAA to fly it legally on the UWF campus. 7-week class.

Exercise for Flexibility and Balance

Foundations and Principles of the U.S. Constitution

Course Description: Class will study the "Original Intent" of the Framers using writings of the Founders. A study of The Federalist Papers and other writings by the Framers will be used. Mr. Brock has developed a system for memorizing parts of the Constitution. In addition, a Dramatization of the events at the Constitutional Convention will be shown.

Class Leader Bio(s): Margaret Harris was born at "Eglin Field," as it was originally called. She spent her early school years in Okaloosa County. Her mother was born in Crestview. Margaret says, "It has been my privilege to research history and share family stories with my friends and family." Marvin Cochrane came to Eglin AFB in 1986 and is now fully retired. He became hooked on genealogy, largely as a result of taking Margaret's genealogy classes.

Class Leader Bio(s): Aggie Marler loves to dance! She began in couple's ballroom/country dancing, but fell in love with line dancing at the World Dance Championships 2001. Introduction to Tai Chi

Introduction to the Zentangle (R) Method

Course Description: The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well-being, and is enjoyed all over the world. No artistic talent or previous experience is required. This class takes the learner from the very basics of the Zentangle Method through the ability to create Zentangle Inspired Art. Students who complete the 5 classes will qualify to join a free Zoom group that meets twice monthly.
Notes: This is a 5-session class meeting in person at UWF for the first session on September 20 where you will purchase a Zentangle Toolkit for a fee of $15. Classes on September 27, October 11 , 8 and November 1 will be online. (No class on October 4.) To participate, you must have access to personal internet plus technology capable of using the Zoom app. (If you are a returning participant, you will not need to purchase a new toolkit, but you will need new tiles, which may be purchased in the first class.)

Class Leader Bio(s): Shannon Flynn is a retired classroom teacher who found Zentangle in 2020 and fell in love. She had never before been successful at any visual art form, but the Zentangle Method changed that! In 2020 she attended the international seminar to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher. She then started teaching small classes locally and created a group of tanglers called Fabtangling Fun. In August 2023, she will be a guest instructor at the Zenjo Retreat in Wales.

Kindness Rocks - Rock Painting with Trish

Course Description: Using acrylic paints, mixing colors, gluing accessories to rocks, at the end of the course, each student will have decorative rocks which they can keep or give to someone.
Notes: Rocks, paints and brushes will be provided the first day. If students want to continue, they will need to buy some 2 oz. acrylic paints and a few brushes. Note: Such paints can be purchased at any hobby store (Michael's, Jo-Ann's) as can a variety of brushes.

Course Description: Get out your old photos and video clips and put them in a format that can easily be displayed and shared. Using the Windows Movie Maker program on the classroom computers students will learn how to group their photos and movie clips into a single movie with music, narration and titles which can be displayed on any computer, TV or smart phone. Special effects and transitions between photos and movie clips will be demonstrated. Conversion of your hard copy photos and negatives into digital format will be discussed. This is an intermediate class requiring basic Windows computer skills. The movie files we make can be played but not created or edited on Apple computers. However, photos taken and stored on iPhones can be used in your movie. 7-week class.

U.S. Political Parties: History and Role

Course Description: The Constitution of the United States does not mention political parties. However, since the 1790s, political parties have played a major role in government. This course will examine the history of the two-party system, the role of the Electoral College, national conventions and state primaries, the role of the presidential debates and the candidate-centered presidential election campaign.

Course Description: This class will help you wade through the flood of weather and climate info that bombards us daily. Improve your understanding of our planet and become a savvy consumer of all this data! Topics are divided into three general areas. Part 1: Instill a basic understanding and appreciation of the earth sciences (meteorology, geology, oceanography). Part 2: Discuss and give context to earth science "current events". Part 3: Provide personal anecdotes from over 30 years' experience as a meteorologist and "glorified data collector" (aka, "World Famous Hurricane Hunter").
