15-Minute Daily Yoga with Friends

Course Description: Studies show a short daily yoga practice with friends is beneficial to your mind and body. (Ok well, that was my study with me being the subject and I feel much better when I do this!)
This is a quick session to get your day started. We will sign on to Zoom and have a short chat over coffee and then do a 15-min (approx.) yoga session. Yoga flow via YouTube instructors.

Class Leader Bio(s): Nicole Blatt is not a yoga instructor. However, she started doing this with friends every weekday for over two years now. We use YouTube videos from great yoga instructors. Nicole retired from the USAF in 2011 and now has an awesome 10-year-old son named Bodie. Nita Wilkinson joined our coffee-talk yoga group in January 2021 and substitute hosts.

Advanced Photography

Course Description: In the photography advanced course, students should already know how to adjust their shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Students will learn how to improve
compositional and lighting techniques in order to take better pictures. The class will alternate weekly between zoom class and photo outings/field trips.

Class Leader Bio(s): Jim Eustace has been involved in photography since spending time in Europe in 1978. His primary camera is Canon. Backyard Astronomy

Course Description: Have you ever wondered what that ‘star’ is in the evening sky? Join a NASA
Solar System Ambassador in exploring the solar system and beyond. Learn how to use a small telescope, how to navigate the night sky and identify the objects that you see. Discussions will cover the solar system as well as celestial objects such as constellations, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. We will also cover the language of Astronomy from appulse to syzygy to zenith. This class combines classroom lecture and, weather permitting, telescope observation under the starry
Note(s): This class will be 4-weeks double session class meeting October 3, 10, 17 and 24. There are items I would encourage you to consider in order to make your astronomical experience more enjoyable. If you have never been to the observatory, please make your first visit in daylight. The observatory is located somewhat away from the main campus back in the woods. The road to the observatory is gravel, single lane, one way, narrow and rough. Making your first trip in daylight will make it easier to find your way in and out, as well see where parking is located. There will be time in each session dedicated to taking telescopes outside and viewing some of the objects that we discussed during class. You will need to dress appropriately for the weather that evening.

He is a NASA Solar System Ambassador and the outreach coordinator for the NorthWest Florida Astronomy Association. His personal observatory is recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). His observations concentrate on asteroid and comet orbit verification and he has submitted more than 8,000 astrometric observations to the IAU’s Minor Planet Center.

Ballet for Balance

Course Description: This is a class for active adults who want to improve their balance while learning the basics of ballet.
No tutus or leotards required! No previous ballet experience necessary.

Class Leader Bio(s): Jackie Youngblood grew up dancing and opened her own dance studio in Georgia while in college. She taught ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, aerobics, and disco for ages 3 through adult.

Basic Photography

Course Description: This course is all about taking better pictures. Any camera will suffice. The group will spend every other week in the field taking pictures, alternating weeks we will critique them in the classroom. If the past is any indication, we will have representatives for Canon, Nikon, Sony iPhone and bridge cameras to answer some of your camera particular questions. This is a group social event as well as improving your pictures. Practicum locations will be dependent on weather and will be emailed to the students.

Course Description: Learn to make lovely necklaces and bracelets using the Japanese Kumihimo and classic beading techniques. The class should result in production of a necklace and bracelet.

Class Leader Bio(s): Denny Lauer is an experienced CLL teacher and has been creating Kumihimo braid and beading designs for over five years. Card Sharks - Deal with It!

Chair Yoga

Course Description: Chair Yoga classes will explore Hatha yoga through breathing, feeling and listening to the body, using a chair as the primary prop. The class will focus on both seated and supported standing poses.
The class is designed for anyone interested in beginning a Yoga Practice. The class will introduce basic breathing techniques, stretches, poses, and meditation.
Note(s): Sturdy chair such as a folding chair and your yoga mat. PC or MAC access to Zoom with camera and microphone. Camera view of your full self will allow instructor to provide helpful feedback. Crime and Violence in America

Course Description: Do we have a crime problem in America? Do we have a violence problem in America? If you say yes, why? If you say no, why?
We will look at a bit of the history of the criminal justice system in America. We’ll talk about violent crimes (and other types too) and how they are punished, or not. We’ll talk about why that is the case or isn’t. If this is your first time in this class and if all goes well, you will leave class more bewildered, bemused, and befuddled than when you started, or not!

Curve Stitching: from Mathematics to Art

Drones for Beginners

Course Description: If you have just purchased a drone, or are about to do so, this class is for you.
Learn the different types of drones that are available and which one to buy for your needs. Learn how to fly a drone safely and stay within FAA regulations. The class will provide tips on how to shoot video with a drone and edit it. Outdoor practice sessions in safe areas, as well as indoor classes, will be included. You do not have to own a drone to take this class, but if you do own one, you must register it with the FAA to fly it legally on the UWF campus.
Note(s): Your drone must be registered with the FAA in order to fly on the UWF campus.

Everyday Yoga for Everyone: Awaken

Course Description: Get your day started with movement! This is a gentle warm up and a short hatha practice. All poses will be done standing or seated in a chair. Foundations and Principles of the U.S. Constitution

Grand Tour of the Universe

Course Description: There have been many scientific revolutions in the last 120 years, from Relativity, Quantum Theory, to the
discovery of Black Holes, the expansion of the universe and the mysterious Dark Matter and Dark Energy. This course takes a very basic look at topics in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology through the lens of these revolutions in knowledge. The discoveries and their discoverers will also be put into historical context, for example, what accepted wisdom did the revolutions overturn and what was the impact.

Class Leader Bio(s): Aggie Marler loves to dance! She began in couple's ballroom/country dancing, but fell in love with line dancing at the World Dance Championships 2001. Since then, she has had the privilege to teach line dancing, to deejay at national dance events for more than 10 years, and to teach local classes more than 15 years.

Introduction to the Zentangle ® Method

Course Description: The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well-being, and is enjoyed all over the world. No artistic talent or previous experience is required. This class takes the learner from the very basics of the Zentangle Method through the ability to create Zentangle Inspired Art. Students who complete the 4 classes will qualify to join a free Zoom group that meets twice monthly.

Class Leader Bio(s): Shannon Flynn is a retired classroom teacher who found Zentangle in 2020 and fell in love. She had never before been successful at any visual art form, but the Zentangle Method changed that! In 2020 she attended the international seminar to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher. She then started teaching small classes locally and created a group of tanglers called Fabtangling Fun. Shannon lives in Santa Rosa Beach with her husband and cat and an ever-growing collection of tangling supplies.

Course Description: Which camera takes the best pictures? The one you have with you, of course! In this class, you will learn how
to get more out of the iPhone camera. Topics will include becoming a better photographer, adjusting your iPhone camera, editing pictures on your iPhone, photo and video editing, creating and sharing albums, and downloading your iPhone pictures for actual prints to enjoy and share. As a bonus, we will also learn a bunch of general iPhone tricks as we go. Sorry, this class is specifically for iPhones/iPads; users of other brands of smartphones may not derive any benefit.

Course Description: Using acrylic paints, mixing colors, gluing accessories to rocks, at the end of the course, each student will have at least 2 rocks which they can keep or give to someone. Rocks, paints and brushes will be provided the first day. If students want to continue, they will need to buy some 2 oz. acrylic paints and a few brushes.
Note(s): >Acrylic paints can be purchased at any hobby store (Michael's, Jo-Ann's), as can a variety of brushes. Blue, yellow, and red paints (primary colors) can be used to mix all colors.

Large Dog (30 lbs. or larger) Handling and Obedience

Course Description: This class is for dogs 30 lbs. or larger. The AKC Canine Good Citizen Award test will be the foundation for this course.
A fee of $25 for the test will be collected. We will teach your dog how to accept a friendly stranger, allowing them to pet, examine and groom the dog. We will teach your dog how to walk on a loose leash through a crowd and to stay when commanded. Your dog will come when called, act properly around other dogs, and tolerate distractions. Your dog will be on a leash at all times. Make sure your dog has current vaccinations.
Note(s): >First class meets at Enlightened Studios highway 98. Do not bring your dog, but do bring chairs and shot records. Handlers must have a 6' leash with well-fitting buckle or pinch collar. No choke chains allowed. $25 fee for test.

Learn to Play Cribbage

Course Description: Learn the basic game of Cribbage for two players, following the rules in The American Cribbage Congress (ACC) Rule Book. Cribbage Boards and 52-Card decks will be available at the class. The class is ideal for new players, or those players wanting to gain more confidence in tournament play. Sequence of play, protocol, strategy, and tournament specific rules will be introduced followed by game play.

Organize and Display Your Photos

Course Description: Get out your old photos and video clips and put them in a format that can easily be displayed and shared. Using the Windows Movie Maker program on the classroom computers students will learn how to group their photos and movie clips into a single movie with music, narration and titles which can be displayed on any computer, TV or smart phone. Special effects and transitions between photos and movie clips will be demonstrated. Conversion of your hard copy photos and negatives into digital format will be discussed. This is an intermediate class requiring basic Windows computer skills. The movie files we make can be played but not created or edited on Apple computers. However, photos taken and stored on iPhones can be used in your movie.

Class Leader Bio(s): Margot Penner has been co-teaching Dog Handling with Jim Eustace at CLL for a number of years. Together they have had dozens of dogs pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. Credit for that accomplishment goes to the outstanding and dedicated dog owners who have taken their class. Margot is the owner of a Goldendoodle, who is her service dog, and a Labradoodle, who is her service dog in training. Jim Eustace will be co-teaching a class for dogs weighing over 30 pounds.

Supreme Court: Its History and Role

as the third branch of government. This course will examine the Court's impact on American society from the early Republic to the new millennium. Included in our discussions will be the Court’s history and traditions, role of the chief justice, qualifications of the justices, nomination and confirmation process, daily operations, landmark decisions, judicial review and the debate on Court reform.

When Machines Fail

Course Description: Modern machines have made our lives easier, particularly by greatly improving travel and communication. We need these machines to work perfectly and the people operating them to not make mistakes. But mistakes can happen, and such things as bad weather tend to cause catastrophes. We will look at some of these incidents and try to understand what happened. Examples will include why a Soviet submarine almost fired a nuclear torpedo, or what happed on the ill-fated voyage of the Edmond Fitzgerald? Note: different scenarios will be discussed that were not presented in my previous classes.
